A Warm Welcome from Mrs Woodward: Headteacher

St Mary’s is a very special primary school. We are lucky enough to be situated in the beautiful countryside of Hawkshaw, but within just a few miles of Bury and Bolton, both thriving towns. We enjoy wonderful views from our school over the surrounding scenery and the village recreation ground, directly behind our school, is a large part of our life, regularly being used for summer playtimes, sports events and educational lessons. Our friendly school is based on traditional Christian values. Each child is cared for as an individual and nurtured to reach their personal potential. We have chosen to limit our admission number to 15 per year. We currently have 109 children on roll, taught by three full time teachers, three part time teachers, as well as five teaching assistants. This enables a pleasing pupil / teacher ratio.

We enjoy, and benefit from, strong links with Church and community.  Each week we welcome our vicar, Reverend Paul Sumsion., to lead collective worship.  We feel that our school is at the heart of village life.  There is a ‘family feel’ to our school. All the children blossom in our safe and secure environment.

Inside our school building there are four large classrooms, two downstairs and two upstairs, as well as a Hall which serves as a worship space during Assembly and a dinner hall at lunch time. We have a library upstairs which is also used for small group work and meetings.

Our playground can comfortably cater for the maximum number of children we have on roll and has been recently refurbished with a soft coloured surface covering one half of the playground as well as football nets and basketball hoops. All children are able to interact with each other at break times and dinner time and often use the playground for PE as well as outdoor learning. We also have access to the Community Garden, and the recreation ground directly behind the school building.

Classrooms are light and airy with stimulating working walls and bright displays to help promote a positive learning environment. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard and access to laptops, Ipads or computers, as well as a hard floor area for messy activities. Class 1 has the benefit of a well -resourced outdoor area as well as unlimited access to the Community Garden.
